About psychologists

Psychologists are doctoral-trained mental health providers. They evaluate and treat psychological, behavioral and emotional conditions using evidence-based therapies (CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR and others) and standardized assessment.

Psychologists do not prescribe medication in most states (5 states allow it after additional training). They often work alongside psychiatrists who handle medication management.

FAQ

Psychologists — questions, answered

What's the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?+

Psychologists hold a doctorate (PhD/PsyD) and provide therapy and psychological testing. Psychiatrists are physicians (MD/DO) who diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication.

What does a neuropsychologist do?+

Neuropsychologists are licensed psychologists with additional fellowship training in brain-behavior relationships. They perform comprehensive testing for ADHD, learning disorders, dementia, TBI and other conditions.

Can psychologists prescribe medication?+

In most states, no. Five states (NM, LA, IL, IA, ID) plus the DoD allow prescribing psychologists after additional training. Most patients see a psychiatrist for medication.

How long does psychotherapy take?+

Short-term, focused therapy (CBT for anxiety, for example) often runs 8–20 weekly sessions. Longer-term work for trauma or complex conditions may run 6+ months.
