Online CE

Online CE for Nurses

Accredited online continuing education for nurses — how to find it, how to vet it, and how to be sure your state board will accept the hours.

Trusted online CE providers

  • ANCC-accredited specialty societies (AACN, ENA, ONS, AWHONN, AANP)
  • Hospital-system CE portals (often free for staff)
  • University-affiliated programs
  • CDC TRAIN and AHRQ (federal, free)
  • Major paid platforms with ANCC accreditation

How to verify a provider

  • ANCC accreditation logo + provider number on certificate
  • State board approval (esp. CA BRN, FL, IA, KS, KY)
  • Specialty board recognition (CCMC, BCEN, etc.) if you hold that cert
  • Search your state board's CE provider database

Live vs on-demand

Both count as long as the provider is accredited. Live virtual courses (Zoom, webinar) typically award the same contact hours as in-person. Recorded modules are 'enduring materials' and may be capped in a few states.

Mandatory-topic CE online

Many state-mandated topics (opioid prescribing, human trafficking, implicit bias, suicide assessment) are widely available online for free or low cost — often from state health departments or universities.

Track and store certificates

  • Download each certificate as PDF; save by year and topic
  • Use a tracker (CE Broker in FL/GA/KY/MS/NM/SC/WV/DC, or your own spreadsheet)
  • Keep records for at least one full renewal cycle past audit window
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is online nursing CE accepted by state boards?

Yes — every U.S. board of nursing accepts online CE from ANCC-accredited or state-approved providers. Confirm the provider's accreditation appears on the certificate.

How do I know a provider is legitimate?

Look for ANCC accreditation, state board approval, or recognition by a national specialty body (AACN, ENA, ONS, etc.). The provider number should be printed on every certificate.

Can I do all my CE online?

In most states, yes — the contact hours don't have to be live. A few states cap independent-study hours; check your state board.

Is free CE as good as paid?

Quality varies. Free CE from accredited specialty societies, federal agencies (CDC TRAIN, AHRQ), and academic centers is excellent. Free CE bundled with product marketing should be reviewed for commercial bias.
